A few weeks ago, Kieran and I went to see Dylan Moran at the Manchester Opera House. We obviously needed a good feed before going to see a night of comedy, so we decided on the Armenian Taverna.
The decor is incredibly dated – carbon dated in fact – but I actually found that this actually added charm to the place. We got in there at about 5pm and it was empty, but quickly filled up, which was a good sign. The service was great and very attentive.
We ordered the Armenian Banquet: –
Starters: hummus, falafel, tabouleh, baba ganouge, kufta, yershig, taramasalata, mutabal, binirow borek, chef’s lavish bread;
Main Course: a selection of chef’s mixed kebab – chicken, minced lamb, lamb chop and pork cooked over charcoal – served with rice and with a skewer of grilled onions, peppers and tomatoes;
Dessert: Coffee and an Armenian delight

The best thing was definitely the mezze platter. It. Was. Amazing. Everything was perfectly cooked and full of flavour.
Everything on the plate was just fabulous and there was such a variety. The highlights for me were the hummus and the falafel.
The main course was tasty, but not as inspiring.
It was kebabs, with rice and a tomato sauce. After loving the starter so much, I found the main course a bit of an anti climax as it was a little bland.
Dessert was coffee, with some sweets, which are just described as Armenian Delights.
These were pretty much like turkish delight and tasted lovely.
All of the above was – get this – £17.00.
Bargain and totally delicious. Definitely recommended – as it will be the best mezze you ever have!
