Those of you who play the computer game ‘Portal’ will be familiar with the portal cake, which apparently you are promised all the way through the game, but never get, hence ‘the cake is a lie’. I’ve never played it myself, but Kieran is a fan, so I thought I’d make him a portal cake for his birthday. Obviously basing a cake on a digital image of a cake requires a bit of creative license. I was basing my cake on the image below:

Here is my effort:

There are clear differences, but considering I had half a days notice and walked around tesco after work looking for ingredients just armed with the picture above, I don’t think I did too bad a job. In hindsight, I should have made the cake taller, with more layers. And probably used cherries instead of strawberries – but Kieran still really liked it. The cake was coffee and walnut and the filling was buttercream. Lovely!

Chris thinks this is great. He has played the game too. Looks very good to me, especially based only on the picture there! At least you let him blow out the candle and didn’t whisk the cake away laughing.
