Liver: love it or hate it?

Liver is certainly one of those ‘love it or hate it’ foods. It certainly divides opinion – even in our household. Kieran wont go anywhere near a piece of liver and will only eat paté if it doesn’t taste too ‘iron-y’. Some people won’t eat it just because they don’t like the thought of it (which in my opinion is a stupid reason not to eat something).

I should tell you now that I’m a massive fan of liver. Whatever the animal, whether it’s fried whole, or in the form of a paté or terrine, I will always enjoy eating a nice plate of liver. In fact, I am pretty much guaranteed to order liver if it appears on a restaurant menu – I even order it in Nando’s.

Which is why I make it a lot when Kieran is out, as it is the only chance I get to eat it at home. I love calves or lamb’s liver with onion gravy and mustard mashed potato. Delicious.

  1. I don’t understand why people e won’t east liver just because it is liver if they will eat other meat. Personally I didn’t like it when I tried it but how can you tell until you do?!

  2. Neil won’t eat kidneys or liver either but I love it, fried until just cooked, never dry and overdone, with some lovely onion gravy and crispy chips. Nom!

School dinners when liver was braised for 3 hours and served up like dry paving slabs that turned to sawdust in your mouth and that utter cow Mrs Marsh wouldn’t let you leave the table until you ate it all – that’s why people think they don’t like liver.

    • I’m fine with people trying something and discovering they don’t like it, but a pet hate of mine is people refusing to try something because they ‘know’ they won’t like it! Grr!

      • That’s a pet hate for me too. I have a few friends who don’t like the ‘idea’ of fish, so they don’t eat any kind of fish or seafood. Despite the fact that most of it is delicious, and the flavours and textures can be so varied.

It’s the same with things like black pudding and haggis. Fair enough if you don’t like the taste, but what’s so different about eating black pudding when you already eat meat?

I’m a fairly picky eater in that there are things that I know I dislike, but it’s so annoying to hear people talking about food that they hate when they’ve never even tasted a morsel.
